Different World! by Hannah Hempenstall

Big!, UK, 27th May 1998

How different are the lives of TV stars in England, Australia and America? We ask the boys...

Australia - Neighbours' Jesse Spencer

What time do you get up for work?

Sometimes I get up at 5:45am! But if I don't have to work till 12pm I usually get up at 7am cos I do lots of stuff when I'm not working. I'm doing lots of running cos I'm going to do a 5km race. Today's my first day off in a month!

Talk us through an average day at work?

I get to work and I go into wardrobe and make-up which takes five minutes. That leaves 30 minutes to run over my lines. I get a two hour break during the day when I'll practice my violin. I'm also taking singing lessons, my teacher is five minutes from the studio which is handy. I don't like wasting time. When I started on Neighbours I was still at school, so I learnt to do loads of stuff in my breaks and I've kept that up so I maximise my time.

What do you do after work?

Some days we can be working for 15 hours and on those days I just come home and eat my dinner, learn my lines for the next day and go to sleep. If I haven't had such a big day I'll come home and go for a run or read a book. I always run over my lines.

Do you get recognised when you're out?

Occasionally, but I usually wear stuff that's very different to what Billy wears. I deliberately don't walk past schools at 3pm cs I'd get mobbed! Sometimes, 17-year-old schoolboys will kick up a fuss, but I laugh cos it's pretty funny.

What do your mates think of your job?

I never talk to them about it. Sometimes I talk about what's happening during the day. I've known them all since school and when we go out it's usually to the pub, or to a party if there's one on.

Which celebrity girls do you think are gorgeous?

I think that Kate Winslet is gorgeous. Everyone was goingon about her having a weight problem but she's fine! And I like Uma Thurman too. I think Baywatch babes are yuk!

Would you like to appear in a England soap and if so, which one?

Yeah, but I don't know if I could pull off an English accent, so I'd have to come in as an Aussie. I'd like to be in Eastenders. It was on in Australia for a while but they took it off air. I like Coronation Street too. It's a bit bizarre though isn't it?

(Coronation Street's Adam Rickitt and Boy Meets World's Will Friedle represented United Kingdom and America, respectively.)
