The Boomerang Effect by Joel Stratte-McClure LA Daily News, USA, 14th May 2006
OK, so Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman and Naomi Watts weren't at the Avalon Hotel Thursday night.
But that's because they're already big stars. And the second annual Australians in Film Breakthrough Awards was honoring fresh faces Jacinda Barrett ("Poseidon"), Leigh Whannell and James Wan, the writer/directors of "Saw," and Jesse Spencer, that hot hunk on ABC's [sic] hit "House".
Which one is he? The cute blond M.D. with the Australian accent whom you probably thought was British. Just like you probably think Hugh Laurie is American.
But he's not. Laurie does an American accent on the show, but he's really British.
Confusing, isn't it?
According to "House's" Jennifer Morrison, who presented the bright yellow boomerang-shaped award to Spencer, his Aussie accent caused an "accent disaster."
Turns out that the producers wanted an American actor but loved Spencer. So they asked him to do a British accent in rehearsal, which he did.
But that totally threw off Laurie's American accent. So they finally let him keep his real accent.
"It took us a while to get used to the new vocabulary," admitted Morrison.
